Male’ City Mayor Maizan Ali Manik (Alibe’) has said that as soon as Usfasgandu is taken, the council will grant Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) another piece of land to hold their political activities.
Usfasgandu area was leased to MDP by Male’ City Council to hold their political activities. Police has taken over the area yesterday.
Speaking at a MDP rally held near Usfasgandu area last night, Alibe’ said that if access to one area is denied, access to another area will be granted by the council, and that the council currently holds authority over 32 separate pieces of land in the city.
“As soon as they take this (Usfasgandu) from us, we will grant you another area. That is for your sake, the citizens. I don’t want the Maldivian people to perish,” said that Mayor of Male’ City Council, where MDP holds the majority.
He said that the High Court ruling stating that Usfasgandu shall not be leased to any parties henceforth will be appealed in the Supreme Court.
A number of MPs and members of MDP’s national council spoke at the rally held near Usfasgandu last night. Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed has praised the speaker of the parliament for acknowledging that the Parliament Committee on Oversight of the Government had the authority review the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) report.
He has harshly criticized the current government and also police and military leaders, and said that they will do all that is necessary to change the government.
Speaking at the rally, former MDP chairperson and current Machangoalhi-North MP Mariya Ahmed Didi said that Maldives cannot hold a presidential election that disallows Nasheed to contest. She said that MDP works for freedom and that they will keep working towards that end.
MDP concluded its rally last night after announcing that they will periodically hold rallies in that area in the future.
