President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the amendment to Legal Profession Act, which will effectively remove the Attorney General from the Bar Council of Maldives’ executive committee.

North-Hulhumale’ MP Hussain Shareef submitted the bill to the parliament on July 17th on behalf of the state.

President’s Office confirmed to ‘Sun’ that the president ratified the amendment on Tuesday.

Bar Council’s executive committee consists of nine members, which includes the Attorney General, who will be removed from the committee once the amendment comes to effect.

With this, the committee will consist only of its president, vice president, and members appointed by lawyers.

The amendment is aimed at enhancing the council’s autonomy, while ensuring the policies governing the legal fraternity are made by those selected by them. The law extends discretion to the council to accredit certificates and documents from academic institutions and official entities.

Besides this, the revisions also grant discretion to diplomatic missions to attest documents required for foreign applications.
