What exists currently in Maldives is a military government: DRP

DRP has said that the current government of the Maldives is a military government.

In a Press Conference held today at DRP Office, Deputy Leader of the party said that President Nasheed currently holds the post of Chief Martial Law Administrator.

“Mohamed Nasheed, who previously held the post of President, is now the Military Chief. As we understand it, what exists in the Maldives now is a military government,” he said.

He said that a military government could isolate Maldives from the rest of the world, and could leave the country in deep economic trouble.

“Our nation does not have the financial capability to have a Martial Law Administration. Our concern is the country that the country might end up in deep economic problems, and that we may face pressure from the outside world,” he said.

Shareef believes that Supreme Court should also make the announcement that the country now has a military government.

“We believe that at this stage, there is no need to present the laws. Supreme Court has issued a ruling. We hope that steps will be taken in accordance with this ruling. If not, we will decide on the next step after discussing with our lawyers,” he said.
