A contaminated honey brand, specific for medical applications, is being marketed and sold by local online portals and social media channels according to Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA).

The authority has flagged ‘Royal Honey’ and ‘Black Horse’ brands.

The authority in a statement confirmed the honey brand in question contains traces Tadalafil (sold under Cialis), a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction and Sildenafil (sold under brand name Viagra). MFDA said it had made a public announcement earlier when the same brand’s honey was sold in the Maldives back in 2022.

The product has been deemed risky and unsafe for consumption by the US FDA as well.

MFDA further cautioned usage of medication infused product could pose risky health consequences, which the authority said could lead to fatal outcomes in some cases.
