MET installs new Lightning Detection System

The Maldives Meteorological Service on Saturday has installed a lightning detection system.

The new system was installed with the support of the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The new system was received by Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim.

Minister Thoriq on X said that with the new long-range lightning detection system, Meteorological Service will have the capability of detecting lightning and severe thunder storms on real-time basis over the Maldives.

MET Office while speaking with ‘Sun’ confirmed the weather forecast authority previously did not possess the system. The authority added that the system will be utilized for aviation sector for real-time weather updates.

While the weather alerts were previously provided only from the stations that possessed the lightning detection system in the region, MET added that it is now equipped to provide real-time data for the aviation sector.
