Discussions held to expedite resolving difficulties faced in obtaining healthcare

Ministry of Social and Family Development has held discussions with the main government hospital, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), on expediting the difficulties faced by the general public in obtaining healthcare.

The Ministry cited difficulties concerning healthcare as the main concern raised by members of the general public during their home visits under its ‘Haalu Kihinei?’ program which seeks to inquire about the wellbeing and the needs of citizens.

As per the Ministry, difficulties raised by the public in this regard included difficulties in consulting with doctors, getting appointments for specialists and renewing prescriptions.

The Ministry, with these concerns, held meetings with IGMH, seeking a timely solution for these issues. Discussions were also held on efforts that can be undertaken at the policy level to achieve a sustainable solution for such issues.

IGMH’s senior management attended these meetings.

Ministry of Social and Family Development assured that they undertaking efforts to address other issues identified via ‘Haalu Kininei?’ program and assist families in need.

The Ministry particularly emphasized the priority they allocated to addressing issues related to healthcare, and in this trajectory, noted that they were in discussions with Hulhumale’ Hospital and National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) for the purpose.

Difficulties in obtaining healthcare is a prevalent issue in the Maldives, especially when it comes to getting appointments for specialist doctors which sometimes even takes up to months due to long queues.

The issue has yet to be resolved despite constant criticism from the public.
