Two arrests have been made from Male’ City in another kidnapping case at a time the Maldivian capital battles a sharp increasing in kidnapping cases,
The suspects have been identified as a 43-year-old Maldivian man, who is a native of Male’, and a 39-year-old woman.
Criminal Court, on Friday, remanded both suspects in custody for 15 days.
As per the court order, both individuals are suspected of luring a person into a room and blackmailing the victim to extort money.
The court order read that sufficient evidence, including snapshots of CCTV footage, had been submitted to warrant suspicions.
Moreover, both suspects had a criminal record. The court also noted direct involvement in committing a crime and conspiring with another person to commit a crime as reasons for the remand.
Kidnapping cases have been rising in the Greater Male' Area at an alarming rate more recently. A total of 27 kidnapping cases have been submitted to the Police this year, as of May 16th. The highest number of cases was submitted in March, at 10.
