Acting President of PPM Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called for PPM to work towards putting an end to the government’s efforts to obstruct freedom of speech by arresting people who voice their opinions on political issues. Gayoom said that the government’s actions are in conflict with the existing Constitution.
Speaking at a meeting held at the B. Eydhafushi Multi-purpose Building, Gayoom said that even though the three powers are separated in the current modern Constitution of the Maldives, principles of democracy are not being followed in the country.
“I do not believe that what’s happening now is acceptable to Maldivians. A change which is acceptable and hoped for by Maldivians can only be brought about now by joining and collaborating with PPM,” Gayoom said.
He further said that PPM was formed not as an act against an individual person, and that its purpose is to serve the country and work for the Maldivian people.
The former President said that several efforts were made for the development of atolls outside of Male’ Atoll during his regime of 30 years, and that he is delighted to see the result and benefits of these efforts now in Eydhafushi.
Gayoom completed his visit to Eydhafushi and returned to Male’ this afternoon.
