President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Friday night, applauded the international community following the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)’s adoption of the resolution granting new “rights and privileges” to Palestine and calling on the Security Council to favorably reconsider its request to become the 194th member of the United Nations.

In a post on X, he described the adoption of the resolution as a “historical milestone for the people of Palestine in their struggle for justice”.

He expressed that the Maldives and its people take inspiration from Palestinians' resilience and bravery citing their sufferings in their ongoing quest to affirm their inherent right to self-determination.

He also affirmed Maldives’ commitment to realize the aspiration of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine, in line with the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The 193-member UN General Assembly approved the resolution by a vote of 143-9 with 25 abstentions on Friday.

It “determines” that the state of Palestine is qualified for membership – dropping the original language that in the General Assembly’s judgment it is “a peace-loving state”. Henceforth, the resolution recommends that the Security Council reconsider its request “favorably.”
