President: Parliament majority needed to strengthen pension fund

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, underscoring the pension fund is regulated under a specific law, states any changes can therewith only be made through the parliament.

He made the remark while responding to a query by Fathimath Hassan Manik, a Hulhumale’ resident, on ‘Raees ge Javaabu’ series inquiring whether the arrangements can be made for monies in the pension fund to be disbursed following resignation from a job.

“There is no way to receive money deducted for pension while in a job upon resignation from that job. Even if the living situation is dire after resignation from the job, there is no way to get that money,” she said.

Responding to Fathimath – President Muizzu said any changes to the pension can be made after amending the law, as pension-related matters are governed under a specific law.

“I do want to strengthen the pension scheme – to ensure the full extent of its benefits to the people,” he said.

“Any changes can only be made by way of submission to the parliament,” he noted.

President Muizzu assured that he understood Fathimath’s concern. But as the changes can only be brought through the parliament, he appealed for majority within the parliament in the upcoming election. 

“The opportunity to bring these changes within the parliament will pave to implement such things,” he added.

The parliamentary election has been slated for April 21st.

The ruling coalition does not hold the majority in the ongoing 19th parliamentary assembly. The majority is held by the main opposition MDP.
