The government of China has signed on agreement with the Maldives to extend military assistance gratis on Monday, March 04, 2024.

The Deputy Director of the Office for International Military Cooperation of China, Major General Zhang Baoqun and Minister of Defense Ghassan Maumoon signed on the agreement on behalf of the Chinese and Maldives governments, respectively.

Major General Zhang paid a visit to the minister and discussed on enhancing defense cooperation between the two countries.

While the Maldives has entered into an agreement with China on militar cooperation, a key pledge of the current administration led by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was to deport Indian military personnel from the Maldives.

Aligned with his promises, President Dr. Muizzu launched efforts to have Indian soldiers, stationed in the Maldives to operate a Dornier aircraft and helicopters gifted by India, sent back home.

President Dr. Muizzu also stated foreign military presence at official capacity was no longer allowed in the Maldives.

Preceding MDP-ruled administration led by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih maintained stronger ties with India, and was described as a "pro-Indian" leader by international media.

On the other hand, Dr. Muizzu was addressed as "pro-China", to which he responded stating he will always remain "pro-Maldives".

Since assumption of office, Dr. Muizzu has maintained close ties with China.
