Umar Naseer has said that some people were ‘lying’ at home watching TV when the country fell into darkness, and that it was the efforts by him and his team that saved the country from this darkness.
Umar said this while speaking at the function held at Artificial Beach last night to launch Team Umar campaign.
He said that if people vote for him and elect his team to steer PPM, they would save the country every time it falls into ‘muddy holes in the ground’. He said that members of his team worked day and night to bring about the changes we see in the country today, and that several people abandoned the country and hid at home when the country needed them.
Umar said that members of PPM should think when electing the party leadership, whether to elect the team that has already produced results or the team that only promises to produce results. He said that depending on who is elected, the party could drift and end up without any form of leadership.
“You have to decide whether to hand over the country’s leadership to the people who have produced results, or the people who promise to produce results. Who would you vote for? Some people were at home watching TV when the country needed them the most. Umar and his team went out and led events at jails and TV stations to make this change. I am asking you to hand over the leadership to us,” he said.
Umar also talked about the incident where former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, when he acted as the head of DRP, handed over the presidential ticket to DRP Leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali without holding a primary.
He said that even when he was a member of DRP, he insisted that the presidential ticket should be given to the person who wins the primary election, but several groups obstructed his efforts to hold a primary election back then. He said that his hard work in this regard has resulted in PPM agreeing to hold a primary election to elect a presidential candidate.
Umar also introduced the candidates included in his team to party members at last night’s function.
Candidates supported by Umar’s team and PPM Interim President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s children Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Ahmed Farish Maumoon and Dhunya Maumoon were not seen at last night’s function.
