President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu states true and lasting peace can only be achieved in the Palestine-Israeli conflict by establishing an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1976 borders.
He made the remark following International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s ruling on Friday ordering to take all measures within its power to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza.
In a post on X, President Muizzu welcomed the order of preliminary measures by ICJ calling on Israel to prevent and punish direct incitement of genocide in the Gaza Strip.
He affirmed Maldives’ belief that Israel needs to stop the killing in Gaza and implement an immediate ceasefire.
“Every human life has value, which needs to be protected. Bombings, displacement and apartheid will not bring peace,” he added.
He emphasized that true and lasting peace can only be achieved in the Palestine-Israeli conflict by establishing an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1976 borders.
Maldives has always advocated for an independent Palestinian state.
The ICJ case was filed by South Africa on December 19th, requesting an injunction against Israel on the grounds that Israel's attacks on Gaza violate the Genocide Convention.
Among the measures South Africa requested was an immediate halt to Israel's brutal offensive, which has laid waste to much of the enclave and killed more than 26,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities.
It also requested that the ICJ grant an injunction due to the urgency of the situation.
On Friday, ICJ, in its interim judgment, ordered Israel to take all measures within its power to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza and also to improve the humanitarian situation in the besieged enclave.
