The President’s Office states President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will address the nation tomorrow, on the occasion of this year’s Republic Day.

The President’s Office said President Solih will address the nation on Saturday morning which will be broadcast on all major local media outlets at 10:00am.

It is likely for this to be his last address to the nation before his term expires on November 17.

Maldives first became a republic on January 1, 1953, which had only lasted for seven months before reverting back to the sultanate on March 7, 1954. The second republic of the Maldives was birthed on November 11, 1968.

November 11 had been the date for the transition of administrations since the second republic of the Maldives was incepted, until 2013, when the Supreme Court vacated the results of the first round of the presidential election. Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who went on to win the election, took office on November 17.

Presidential terms have been counted from November 17 since then.
