The government has requested the Local Government Authority (LGA) via the Ministry of Home Affairs to dissolve Male’ City Council.
Ahmed Faisal from LGA told Sun Online today that the government had made a request via Home Ministry to do the necessary to dissolve the City Council as the council was not fulfilling its due responsibilities. He said that LGA members had not yet been informed of this matter, and that it had not yet been put on the agenda of the Board of LGA.
“The government had highlighted several legal points and notified the Home Ministry, which has requested LGA to do this. But this has not yet been informed to Board members, or put on the agenda,” he said.
He said that he did not believe that the government can notify to dissolve a council, and that the government should instead try to resolve the issues.
“I don’t believe that the government should work towards dissolving a particular council. LGA has no such interest either. We will first try to solve the problems. After that we will consider taking the matter to court if a council is to be dissolved,” he said.
Male’ City Council member Maizan Ali Manik (Alibe) said that this was part of the government’s plan to abolish the decentralisation system.
