Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that 2012 was an “annus horribilis”, or a year of disaster and misfortune.
In a statement on the occasion of New Year, Nasheed said that the past year has been difficult, and that in February, democracy was “stolen” from Maldivians “by people prepared to commit high treason to further their narrow political ambitions”.
“I hope that 2013 will be a better year for Maldivians. This passing year was challenging, but it has given us the strength and unity to stand up for what we believe in,” said Nasheed in the statement.
