Former Home Minister Umar Naseer who is contesting this year’s presidential elections independently has received multiple death threats.
Umar, revealing details regarding the death threat via a Facebook post, said the individual who treated him had questioned ‘how many kilos of drugs he had distributed to gain votes for the presidential election’. The individual further stated that drugs were the biggest source of income to the state, and also threatened to stab Umar and take his life.
Umar, noting he has received multiple death threats, said the matter has been brought to the attention of Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF).
Prior to this, he was attacked at a campaign road rally in Male’ City. In this regard, he said he was hit in the face with a metal object that was thrown from the crowd.
He further detailed that the individual who threw the object at him was a suspected drug dealer and had fled from the scene after throwing it.
He did not sustain any injuries in the attack.
Umar is the presidential candidate with the strictest policies with respect to drugs, who has stated his first act in office will be to save the Maldivian society from drugs.
