Defence Minister Colonel (Rtd) Mohamed Nazim has said that changes will be made in order to improve the Department of Immigration. The department which has been functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs has now been transferred under the Ministry of Defence and National Security.

The government had decided that the department shall function under the Defence Ministry starting yesterday.

Defence Minister Nazim had said today that negotiations are being carried out with the Civil Service Commission (CSC) to find ways to bring changes to the organizational structure of the department. He said that the department will see big improvements in the future.

“The specific changes will be finalized after the meeting today. We have decided to restructure and bring the changes necessary to improve the organization of the place,” said Nazim.

He however, did not share details.

The post of Controller of immigration is still held by Dr Mohamed Ali, who was preceded by Ilyas Hussain, who had been the Controller during the controversial Border Control System project.

The transfer of the Department of Immigration to the Ministry of Defence comes at a time where the government had recently decided to terminate their agreement between a Malaysian company Nexbis regarding the installation of a Border Control System.
