Parliament appointee to the Board of Directors of Maldives Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Nahula Ali has resigned from her post as member of the board. MBC runs Television Maldives (TVM) and Dhivehi Rajjeyge Adu.
The parliament has confirmed that Nahula, who has decided to contest in the PPM council election, has resigned from her post as a member of the board of an independent commission.
Parliament Secretary General Ahmed Mohamed said that her resignation letter had been received today, and that the letter “only stated her resignation”.
The Independent Institutions Committee was scheduled to convene today regarding Nahula’s case, but they have now cancelled their meeting. They had planned to make a decision during the meeting on whether to allow Nahula to join MBC board meetings.
Members of the Independent Institutions Committee had raised the question about whether Nahula can remain as a board member of MBC after she decided to contest in the council election of the second largest political party of the country.
Article 2 (b) of the regulation on MBC states that the institution should ensure that the public broadcaster is free of all political, economic and financial influence.
In addition to Nahula, several Board Members of MBC have been accused of participating in political activities.
