The President’s Office has re-positioned the Department of Immigration and Emigration under the Ministry of Defense, effective from the 28th of this month.
The Department of Immigration and Emigration has been under the Ministry of Home Affairs for a long time.
According to a Press Release issued today by the President’s Office, the Department of Immigration and Emigration was brought under the Ministry of Defense because the work done by the Department was more related to the Ministry of Defense. The statement also said that the change would make it easier for the works of the Department to be coordinated and conducted.
The change has come in the wake of a Press Statement by the Indian High Commission denying the statements of Home Minister Dr. Muhammad Jameel Ahmed in the media about the number of Indian visitors to the Maldives and Indian citizens deported during the ending year from the Maldives.
Jameel said that 4180 Indians visited the Maldives from January to November. The Statement from the Indian High Commission stated that the right figure was 26199.
