What happened to the 900 million Rufiyaa invested in Madhana should be known, says Yamin

Abdullah Yamin, the Parliamentary Group Leader of opposition Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) called upon the Auditor General’s Office to conduct an audit to see what happened to the 900 million Rufiyaa that the people had invested in Madhana, a national health insurance scheme introduced by the former Government.

Madhana was abolished by the current Government effective from the beginning of this year, when it decided to replace it with a wider health insurance scheme called Aasandha, under which all the citizens of the country are said to be able to get medical care free of cost, without having to pay any premiums.

In a gathering of PPM held a night ago at Artificial Beach, Yamin spoke saying that when the Government introduced Aasandha, Madhana had “disappeared without any explanations about the 900 million Rufiyaa that the people had invested in the scheme”.

“Under Madhana, there are outstanding payments to be made to Councils all over the country and many others. Now, Madhana is sent into extinction, and now it is necessary that an audit is conducted to investigate how the Government handled Madhana and what happened to the funds invested in it”, said Yamin.

Yamin also expressed doubts as to the feasibility and durability of the new Aasandha scheme. He said that by August, the money invested in Aasandha Scheme would dry up, and that there are unanswered questions as to what the Government would do when that time comes.
