After days of stalling, the no-confidence motion submitted against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla has been scheduled for Tuesday.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds a supermajority at the Parliament, filed the no-confidence motion against Eva after she left the party last month.

Though the 14-day notice sent to her expired on Sunday, the motion hadn’t been set in the agenda due to delays in key decisions by the Parliament’s General Purposes Committee.

In a letter on Sunday, the Parliament’s secretary general Fathimath Niusha wrote that though the debate time for the motion hasn’t been set as per Article 205 (g) of the Parliament’s regulations, with reference to Article 206, the motion must be set in the agenda for the next sitting held on a working day, under Article 205 (c).

Niusha said the motion has therefore been set in the agenda for Tuesday.

“As it states that the motion must be scheduled for the sitting on the next working day, I hereby inform that the motion has been set in the agenda for the parliamentary sitting scheduled for tomorrow,” she wrote.

According to the Parliament, decisions by the General Purposes Committee got delayed as committees have not been reappointed based on the changes to the Parliament’s composition after 13 MPs from MDP, including Eva, left the party last month.
