The Parliament General Committee has decided to advise the Parliament Public Accounts Committee to abolish MPs’ living allowance of MVR20,000 and include this amount in their basic salary.
This decision was made after discussion at the 38th meeting of the General Committee yesterday.
This means that MPs’ monthly basic salary, inclusive of living allowance of MVR20,000, will be MVR62,500.
Other issues discussed at the meeting included the proposition by Thulhaadhoo MP Nazim Rashad to add clause (d) to article 33 of parliament procedures.
The clause states that if one-third of MPs sign and propose to the speaker to hold a parliament sitting or several sittings during recess, the sitting or sittings must be facilitated and held within 14 days of the proposition. This clause will also override any contradictory clauses in the parliament procedures.
The committee meeting was attended by Maafannu-west MP Abdullah Abdul Raheem, Thulhaadhoo MP Nazim Rashad, Dhaahdhoo MP Mohamed Riyaz and Baarah MP Mohamed Shifaz.
