Adam “Sarangu” Maniku, Mayor of Malé City has resigned from his office. Manik did not state any reasons for his resignation, and he has been appointed as Infrastructure Development Envoy by President Nasheed, not long after his resignation. Manik declined to reveal why he resigned, saying that “I cannot state the real reasons why I have decided to resign”.
Manik, the first Mayor in the history of Malé, the capital of the Maldives and home to more than a fifth of the country’s population swore in as Mayor on 26th February 2011.
While the President’s Office confirmed Manik’s appointment today as the President’s Infrastructure Development Envoy, within few hours of his resignation, Mohamed Zuhair, Press Secretary of the President’s Office, said that Manik would have a bundle of responsibilities in his new office, including the “planning and management of infrastructure development projects as the “Veshifahi” home project, and building streets and bridges”. Zuhair also said that Manik would also act as an advisor to the President on infrastructure development issues.
Manik is already the chairman of the “Veshifahi Malé” program for building new flats in Malé, and with the new office, he would get a salary of MRF42,000, said Zuhair.
