Moneerul Islam, 27, was found dead in a room on the sixth floor of house number 24 on Chaandhanee Magu, around 11:30am on 26 November.

In a press conference held today, the head of the Serious and Organized Crime Department, Chief Inspector of Police Mohamed Dhaaoodh said that Kamarul Islam, 23, who is an illegal immigrant and a close friend of Moneer, attacked and killed Moneer using a sharp object; and that he was asked to do so by Moneer’s relative Abdullah, 34.

Police have arrested the two people.

“Based on the information we have so far, Kamarul Islam is an old friend of Moneer. Moneer was last seen with Kamarul Islam. Investigations have revealed that Kamarul spoke with Moneer in the night on the day he was last seen alive. CCTV footage shows him walking away from the scene on 25 November at around 1.25am after committing the murder,” Dhaaoodh said.

Dhaaoodh also said that during investigations, Kamarul, who had been living in Adh. Dhangethi, confessed to the crime and explained why he committed the murder. Kamarul also said that he threw the weapon and the shirt he was wearing into the sea near T-jetty, and that these items have been recovered by the Police diving team.

Dhaaoodh said that Kamarul had been working in Dhangethi removing sea cucumbers from the sea for the past five years.

Kamarul also said in the investigation that he was promised a good job and money in return for the murder by Abdullah. Dhaaoodh said that investigations also showed that there were several family and financial problems between Abdullah and Moneer, and that Abdullah has been working legally in the Maldives since 2006.

Doctors who investigated Moneer’s body said that he had been stabbed with a sharp object in the neck, chest and face. Dhaaoodh said that forensic evidence had been collected from the crime scene against the suspect.

CCTV footage of 24 November evening showed Moneer near the house where his dead body was found, and the Police had also collected phone calls he made from then until midnight the next day.

Dhaaoodh said that Moneer was last seen at around 11:21pm on 24 November near his house with Kamarul, the man suspected of having murdered him.

He said that Moneer used to work illegally in the Maldives, however, from 16 May 2012, he was an employee of Eon company where he was working as an office boy when he was murdered.

Dhaaoodh said that Moneer started living in house number 24 on Chaandhanee Magu in September 2012, and that the fourth, fifth and sixth floors of the building are used by Eon as housing for foreign employees. Moneer’s body was transported to Bangladesh on 29 November by Eon.
