University staff receives huge salary hike

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Thursday, revealed that the salaries of university lecturers and university top officials have been increased by a mile as of yesterday.

Speaking at the function held to commemorate the 71st anniversary of Hirilandhoo School on Thursday afternoon – President Solih said that the salaries of university lecturers have been increased by 59 percent.

The salary increments as detailed by the president are as follows;

  • Lecturers’ salaries from MVR 18,680 to MVR 29,000 without overtime allowances
  • Senior lecturers’ salaries from MVR 20,830 MVR 34,000
  • Assistant professors’ salaries from MVR 23,500 to MVR 39,400
  • Associate professors’ salaries from MVR 26,000 to MVR 45,000

Further changes announced by the president include;

  • Deans’ salaries from MVR 30,000 to MVR 38,000
  • Registrars’ salaries from MVR 23,000 to MVR 42,000
  • Vocational associate lecturers’ salaries from MVR 14,000 to MVR 26,000
  • Vocational lecturers’ salaries from MVR 17,000 to MVR 29,000
  • Vocational senior lecturers’ salaries from MVR 17,000 to MVR 34,000

President Solih states that the salary increments would apply to a total of 767 people. In total, MVR 63 million per year will be incurred by the state for their salaries.

The president announced salary increment for university lecturers while delivering his presidential address in February.

University lecturers demanded a salary increment following positive changes brought to the salaries of school teachers last year – expressing concern after being left out.

Employees of the Maldives National University (MNU) staged a silent protest last year – demanding for salary increment.
