Bad weather to cause sea surge flooding during next 24 hours: Meteorological Department

Department of Meteorology has said that certain places in the Maldives might face flooding caused by seasurges due to bad weather in the coming 24 hours.

Weather Forecaster at the Department of Meteorology Ms. Azeema Ahmed said today that the flooding is caused by bad weather and that this bad weather will continue throughout the country for the next three days.

“The flooding incidents are caused by sea surgesas a result of bad weather. We are seeing rough seas and high winds especially in the center of the country. We will experience high winds and rough seas all across the country in the coming 24 hours. That’s why we’re predicting flooding,” said Azeema.

Department of Meteorology has said that central areas will face winds up to 15 to 25 mph while the north and south will face winds up to 8 to 18 mph. The department also predicts that winds will take speeds up to 40 mph during storms.

The department predicts that central region will see averagely rough seas throughout the day, while the north and south will experience averagely rough seas during storms.

Flooding due to sea surges has caused damage in Noonu Holhudhoo, Meemu Dhiggaru and Kaafu Gaafaru where seawater has swept inside houses.

Disaster Management Centre and the Meteorological Department have however said that they have not been officially notified of any flooding incidents.
