President vows to not let anything like the murder of Dr. Afrasheem to occur

President Dr. Mohammed Waheed Hassan Manik has vowed to never let “terrible crimes” like the murder of Islamic scholar and Member of Parliament Dr. Afrasheem Ali to occur in the Maldives.

The President’s statements came in a speech at Gaafu Alifu Dhaandhoo, in the southern atoll this evening. The President is currently in a tour to the largest atoll in the country, and Dhaandhoo is the last destination on his itinerary.

In his speech at a meeting with the people of Dhaandhoo, the President said that the reasons for the murder of one of the most prominent religious scholars of the country were political, and that it was done in execution of an elaborately laid plan.

The President said that such an extensively planned murder, for which a huge sum of money was given as reward, is unprecedented in the history of the country, and that the details of the whole plan and the people behind it would be made public very soon.

The President then questioned whether such horrible things should be done for political differences, and questioned whether the people should still keep quiet and just look at how things develop. He said that the nation should never accept such behavior.

The President also said that the government was patient in dealing with the issue, and that the Police were conducting their investigations with help from overseas as well.

The President described the murder of Dr. Afrasheem Ali as “a sad incident and a huge calamity that befell the Maldivian people”. The President also said that if the Maldivian people allowed their country to fall any deeper into such things, there would be no hope for the nation.

The President promised that he would be taking all steps and measures to protect the people, and to save the peaceful society which had been the identity of the country since the earliest times of its history.

The President promised that he would not allow the country to fall into a pit of civil unrest and that all measures, both legal and otherwise, would be taken to make sure that the nation is safe from an internal eruption that would consume it.
