The General Committee of the People’s Majlis has decided to allow the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) to be officially represented in the Majlis.
The issue of representation of PPM in the Majlis arose as the party was registered after the last election of the Majlis, and as no member of the party was elected to the Majlis as PPM members.
The Committee made the decision in a meeting held last Tuesday.
Ahmed Mohamed, the General Secretary of the People’s Majlis said today that the decision of the Committee had been officially communicated to all the Members of the Majlis. He also said that the issue would be included in the agenda when the Majlis resumes after the current recess.
The General Committee made the decision while Ahmed Tasmin Ali, the leader of main opposition Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), and Ibrahim Mohamed Salih, the Parliamentary Group of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party were also present in the session.
PPM was a new party registered this year, after a group of DRP members decided to break away from the party to form a new party.
Abdul Raheem Abdullah, a PPM member who was elected as a DRP candidate to the Majlis for Fonadhoo Constituency, has recently announced that he would resign and run in a by-election as a PPM member if PPM is not allowed to be represented in the Majlis.
