Politicians were behind Afraasheem's murder: Police Commissioner

Police will reveal details related to the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali today, nearly two months after the incident took place. A press conference will be held today at Iskandar koshi for this purpose. Dr Afrasheem Ali was found stabbed to death on the night of 1 October, near the staircase of his apartment building, H. Funvilu.

16:03 - Police have commenced the press conference moments ago. Police Commissioner Abdullah Riyaz said that the details, for which the public had been waiting impatiently, will be revealed today. However since investigations are ongoing, only some information can be revealed. He said that details had to be withheld until now in order to prevent obstructing the investigation.

16:06 - This is the first instance where such a large force was allocated for a particular case. We have arrested 11 people regarding this issue. More than 200 pieces of evidence was been analysed. We have enough evidence for prosecution. We have interviewed more than 100 people.

16:10 - Police are giving press conference with illustrations as well. They are also showing CCTV footages. Riyaz said that Afrasheem went home at around 12:06 that night. His phone calls have also been analysed.

16:11 - The police entered the scene where Afraasheem was murded at about 1:34am. A police jeep arrived at the scene within a minute later and four minutes later, Afraasheem's body was put on the vehicle and taken to ADK hospital.

16:13 - At 1:56 that night, a suspect was arrested and questioned.

16:14 - This was done after thorough planning. Two people were directly involved. They are H. Lolly Hussain Humaam and Ali Shaan. A juvenile under the age of 18 was also involved.

16:16 - We have enough evidence to prosecute the two people and the juvenile who were directly involved.

16:17 - The Commissioner has said that MVR4,000,000 was offered to Afrasheem's murderers. Two people suspected of having funded this were arrested yesterday. However their information cannot be shared just yet.

16:18 - "This is an act of terrorism and the people behind this are politicians. We have found out that this was done by people who had different religious views from him," Commissioner Riyaz.

16:20 - Afrasheem's murder was planned by Kuda Henveiru group. Investigations have revealed that businessmen and politicians are behind this murder. We are looking for those who funded this crime.

16:27 - Press has been given chance to ask questions.

16:31 - Riyaz said that he is not sure they were paid Rf. 4000,000, but that this was the amount they were proposed.

16:47 - People have attempted to mislead Afraasheem's murder investigation.

16:49 - It is possible that the people who planned this murder are not in the Maldives. He said that details of this cannot be revealed yet. He said that everybody involved in this murder have not yet been arrested. He said that no evidence will be revealed, and that all evidence will be forwarded to PG Office.

16:53 - Commissioner Riyaz : This is still an ongoing investigation. He said that he will not hesitate to arrest anybody, regardless of his post or designation.
