Man arrested on suspected drunk driving causing an accident

The police have arrested a man following an accident on the Ali Kilegefaanu Magu in Malé in which he ran over parked motorbikes on the side of the street with his car. The police say that the man was apparently drunk.

The incident occurred around 3:45 am last night, and the man arrested was 21 years of age. According to the police he attempted to run away after the incident, but could not escape the traffic police pursuit.

The police did not state whether the car he was driving was private or not.

Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has tweeted about the incident, asserting that the man is suspected to have been drunk when the incident occurred, and that some 12 motorbikes parked at the parking zone on the street were damaged to varying degrees in the incident.
