Jumhooree Party (JP) has dissociated itself from Feydhoo MP Alhan Fahmy’s remarks that the agreement with GMR cannot be terminated.
At a press conference held yesterday, Alhan said that despite Attorney General Azima Shakoor’s comment that the contract was void ab initio, considering international treaties, the agreement with GMR cannot be terminated.
JP said in a statement that that it was saddened by Alhan’s remarks, and that the remarks do not reflectany decision made by the party.
JP said that its stand on the airport issue has not changed, and that it fully respects the statement by the four-party coalition against the former government endorsed on 26 June 2010.
Alhan said at yesterday’s press conference that the government disregards foreign investments, and that its actions are similar to those of a military government.
“Internationally binding contracts cannot be terminated like marriage contracts. Regardless of what Azima says, agreements cannot be terminated like that, against international contracts and treaties,” Alhan said.
JP also issued a statement condemning Alhan’s remarks when he called for the resignation of President Dr Mohamed Waheed, Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel and Police Commissioner Abdullah Riyaz.
Azima Shakoor said that the agreement with GMR does not comply with the law, in light of several factors such as the circumstances under which it was signed, the High Court ruling regarding the Airport Development Charge (ADC), the letters that have been sent to GMR from the government since January this year, and the events that have transpired after the signing of the agreement. She said that lawyers from the United Kingdom, Singapore and Maldives agree that the agreement was void since the day it was signed.
