Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has said that details of the murder of Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali will not be revealed before the by-election for Ungoofaaru constituency.

Riyaz made this comment on Twitter last night: “Dr Afrasheem’s murder case police media briefing will NOT happen before 2nd December 2012.”

Ungoofaaru by-election will be held on Saturday, 2 December.

Both the President and the Home Minister have said that the murderers have been found.

Consequently, former President Mohamed Nasheed has accused that the Police are delaying disclosing information on the murder until just before the by-election in order to influence the election, and that the Police plan to blame a member of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for the murder of Dr Afrasheem.

Police Commissioner Riyaz responded to Nasheed’s claims, and said that the investigation is still ongoing, and that details will be revealed when the time is right.
