Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali told the Parliament on Monday that the Education Ministry had no plans of changing the beginning of the academic year back to January, as was previously practiced.

She made the statement in response to a question by Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef Umar at the parliamentary sitting on Monday morning.

Aishath said the beginning of the academic year was changed to mid-year after extensive research.

“We changed the beginning of academic year to mid-year after research. And also, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, we found it to be the best course of action,” she said.

Aishath said that frequent changes to the beginning of academic year would be disruptive to students’ education.

“We have no plans of changing it from what is being practiced at present,” she said.

Aishath said that changing the beginning of the academic year to mid-year was beneficial.

The beginning of the academic year was changed to mid-year last year.
