Disability Council elections postponed indefinitely

The Disability Council elections – scheduled for Thursday – has been postponed indefinitely.

Multiple candidates have expressed concern over the postponement.

A candidate who spoke to Sun said the elections were postponed after local councils of 35 islands said the elections couldn’t be held in the islands.

Gender Ministry has initially decided to proceed with the elections without holding votes in the islands in question, but later decided to postpone the elections as the islands in question included populous islands such as Kulhudhuffushi City and L. Gan.

“The ministry said that the elections were postponed because councils of large islands such as Kulhudhuffushi and L. Gan also said that voting couldn’t be held in the islands on that date. The delay in the elections involve a high level of negligence from local councils. We have spent a lot on our campaigns. This is sad to have the elections postponed after having spent so much on it,” said the candidate.

Candidates have spent heavily on the elections. Many of the candidates have set up campaign teams and have travelled to islands to gather support. They believe the postpone of the elections to be a violation of their rights.

They also complain that the Gender Ministry has not engaged in sufficient efforts to provide information related to the elections.

Gender Ministry was not immediately available for comment regarding the situation.
