George Corbin arrives in Maldives for tourism industry’s gold jubilee celebrations

One of the key pioneers of Maldivian tourism, George Corbin, has arrived in the Maldives to participate in the celebratory activities of the golden jubilee of Maldivian tourism, marking the 50^th anniversary since its inception.

Corbin arrived in the Maldives this morning, alongside his daughter, Georgia Corbin. He was welcomed at Velana International Airport by Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom and another pioneer of Maldivian tourism, Health Minister Ahmed Naseem.

Speaking to the press at the airport, Corbin noted that the Maldivian tourism industry has significantly progressed over the past 50 years. He added that he is humbled to be able to take part in the celebratory activities.

During this trip, Corbin is set to partake in a forum of Maldivian tourism pioneers. The forum scheduled to take place on February 17, will see the participation of Minister Naseem, Champa Hussain Afeef and Mohamed Umar Manik.

Corbin played a significant role in bringing the first tourism group to the Maldives. This was during the month of February, in 1972. The first resort in the Maldives, Kurumba Maldives, was opened just eight months later, in October 1972.
