COVID-19: Maldives record 281 fatalities

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Saturday announced an additional COVID-19 death in Maldives.

As per the agency, an 80-year-old Maldivian female admitted at Hulhumale Medical Facility passed away at 03:35 pm.     

“This is the 281st COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” confirmed HPA in a tweet.      

It also marks the 4th COVID-19 death in Maldives in February. 

Maldives is currently battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the new and more contagious omicron variant. Health experts expect the cases to peak by the end of January or the beginning of February.    

Maldives has 146,991 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 1,955 recorded on Friday.

The country currently has 17,735 active cases, out of which 56 of the patients are hospitalized.
