66-year-old dies in Naifaru, increasing COVID death toll to 275

Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Sunday that a COVID-19 patient admitted at the regional hospital in Lh. Naifaru has passed away.     

HPA identified the deceased as a 66-year-old Maldivian female.     

She passed away at 08:05 am on Sunday. 

“This is the 275th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” confirmed HPA in a tweet.    

It marks the 10th COVID-19 death in Maldives in January.     

Maldives is currently battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, fueled by the new and more contagious omicron variant. Health experts expect the cases to peak by the end of January or beginning of February.  

Maldives has 133,288 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 2,689 new cases recorded on Saturday. 115,269 patients have since recovered.         

The country currently has 17,732 active cases. 53 of the patients are hospitalized.
