106-year-old Maldivian man dies, positive for COVID-19

Ali Sulaiman, Fathagumaage, Fuvahmulah City, passed away on January 28, 2022. He was 106-years-old at the time of his death.

One of the oldest living person in the Maldives has passed away.

The deceased has been identified as Ali Sulaiman, Fathagumaage, Fuvahmulah City. He passed away this morning. At the time of his death, he was 106-years-old.

Sun has been informed that the COVID-19 test done on Sulaiman at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) had come back positive. However, Health Protection Agency (HPA) has yet to declare his death as COVID-related.

Sulaiman’s funeral prayer is scheduled to be held this afternoon, at 1:15pm, in Hulhumale’ Cemetery.

Subsequent to Sulaiman’s death, Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has sent condolences to his family.

Should Sulaiman’s death be declared COVID-related, he would be the oldest person to have died from COVID-19 in the Maldives. Prior to this, the oldest COVID-19 victim in the Maldives was a 102-year-old.

As of Thursday, Maldives has recorded 274 COVID-19 deaths. Should Sulaiman’s death be declared COVID-related, the death toll will rise to 275.
