The Government has decided to connect Malé the Capital of the Maldives and Hulhulé, an island near Malé where Ibrahim Nasir International Airport is located. The Ibrahim Nasir International Airport is the major Airport in the Maldives, and it is the only Airport that currently connects the Maldives with the outside the world.
The Cabinet today deliberated on the matter and decided to go ahead with plans of a bridge in order to find a permanent solution to the problem of congestion in Malé and all entailing social problems, said the President’s Office today.
A bridge between Malé and Hulhulé would connect Malé and Hulhumalé via land as well, as Hulhumalé is joined by land to Hulhulé. Hulhumalé is an island in the process of reclamation and development, and the project was conceived and partially implemented by the former government as a solution of over-crowding in Malé as well.
The President’s Office said that international consultants were employed during the middle of this year to do preliminary studies on the feasibility and effectiveness of a bridge project. The unnamed consultants, according to the President’s Office, have given a positive statement after their studies. The party that did the studies has worked in the areas of structural engineering and consultancy since 1946, according to the Government.
According to the preliminary estimates of experts, the project would cost an amount between 70 and 100 US Dollars.
