Adam Naseer exiled over bounced cheque case

Former Registrar General of Transport Authority and member of Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) National Council, Adam Naseer of Jareemaage, Ha. Dhiddhoo, has been exiled for six months by Criminal Court over a bounced-cheque case.

The claim made against Naseer by the State said that Naseer issued a cheque for MVR50,000 from his account in Bank of Maldives (BML) to repay the loan he had obtained from Adam Rafeeu, but BML could not release the funds as there was not enough money in Naseer’s account.

Naseer failed to pay the money to Rafeeu within seven days, as requested in writing by Rafeeu.

The Criminal Court ruling said that two witnesses testified in Court that Rafeeu handed over a letter to Naseer while he was at work at Transport Ministry. The Court said that Naseer denied being in the office on the day in question; however, office records showed that a letter was signed by Naseer on that day.

As sufficient testimonies and evidences were collected, the Court found Naseer guilty of issuing a bounced cheque and failing to pay the money, and exiled him for six months as per article 39 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
