May 6 blast: Haisham, Fahmy and Nazim pleads not guilty to charges

Three suspects who has been charged in connection to the attempt to assassinate Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed on May 6 – has pled not guilty at court today.

Charges have been filed against seven suspects in connection to the terror attack. They are: Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed, 26, Hiyaa, V. Thinadhoo; Mujaz Ahmed, 21, Ma. Feyruge, K. Male'; Thahmeen Ahmed, 32, Folheyma, GA. Kondey; Ali Haisham, 27, Nooreege, N. Manadhoo; Is’haq, M. Kudhehige, K. Male’; Fahumy Ali, Hudhuruvaage, GA. Vilingili and Mohamed Nazim, Asareege, AA. Maalhos.

The trial of all the suspects apart from Adhuham – is opened for the public. Adhuham, whom the police suspects to have detonated the IED, signed a plea deal with the State and pled guilty to all charges at court – subsequent to which Court had decided to hold closed-door hearings.

In the hearing held today at Criminal Court – the charges against the other six suspects were read out.

Out of the six suspects – Haisham, Fahumy and Nazim had pled not guilty to the charges and expressed their wish to submit evidence for defense.

Meanwhile, the lawyers of Mujaz, Thahmeen and Is’haq said that they wished to review the documents and videos submitted as evidence by the State – before responding to the charges. In this regard, the lawyers’ said that it is difficult to respond to the charges without reviewing the documents worth of 1,200 pages and the videos in a 2TB hard disk.

In addition to this – the lawyers had also requested that five days be given to view the videos at court – and 30 days be given to review the documents.

The three-judge bench presiding over the case had granted the additional time to review the documents. The bench also decided to give the chance for the lawyers’ to view the videos and court – and on this note had asked the administrative desk to make the necessary arrangements for it.

In a hearing held before however, Mujaz and Thahmeen had pled not guilty.

Details of the charges pressed against each suspect under the Anti-Terrorism Act:

Adhuham was pressed with four charges; carrying out an act of terrorism, conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism act, attempted murder using a sharp-edged instrument or dangerous weapon, and supporting a terrorist organization. However, subsequent to his admission of guilt – the State had withdrawn the charge of conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism under the plea deal.

Thahmeen was pressed with four charges; participating in carrying out an act of terrorism, conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism, aiding in transporting an explosive, and supporting a terrorist organization

Haisham was pressed with three charges; conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism, aiding in transporting an explosive, and participating in carrying out an act of terrorism.

Mujaz was pressed with two charges; conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism and aiding and abetting a fugitive. 

Fahumy is being charged with participating in an act of terrorism.

Nazim is being charged with conspiracy to carry out an act of terrorism.
