President Nasheed has extended an invitation to Salaf Jamiyya to participate in the religious scholars’ discussions regarding Islamic penalties which are to be determined in the Penal Code.
The President’s Office informs that the decision to have a meeting with Salaf Jamiyya was made, as highlighted in The President’s radio address, in order to hold discussions with regard to Islamic penalties to be included in the Penal Code, as well as to discuss other religious issues.
They also said that The President wishes to hold this meeting this evening at the President’s Office, and Salaf’s President has been informed of this today.
Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair said that they are currently awaiting a reply from Salaf Jamiyya.
“The president is waiting for their response. As soon as a reply is received, he will continue with the process,” Zuhair said.
Abdulla bin Mohamed Ibrahim, President of Salaf said that they have not received any such invitation from the President. He also said that he did receive a phone call this evening, however, as Salaf is a registered organization, he requested that a letter be sent instead. He does not believe that this was done in a responsible manner.
Press Secretary said that in addition to sending a letter, Salaf has been informed of this over the telephone as well, and that there is hardly any reason to deny this.
“Ever since the decision was made, we are ready and waiting in the office. It could be that they do not want to say anything before the meeting,” Zuhair said.
