Over half a million Rufiya donated by businessmen for flood victims

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that about half a million Rufiya has been donated by businessmen as aid for flood victims in Hoarafushi.

The President said this while talking to reporters yesterday at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, upon his return after visiting Hoarafushi to assess the extent of damage in the island.

“I understand that about half a million Rufiya has been received to the relief fund in Hoarafushi alone,” he said.

The President mentioned that generous amounts have been received from Meedhoo MP Ahmed Shiyam, Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim and Champa Brothers Maldives.

Hoarafushi Council Member Ahmed Ahsan said today that Ahmed Shiyam (Sun Travels) is among those who extended most assistance to Hoarafushi, including MVR100,000 in addition to other forms of aid.

Ahsan said that the President personally contributed MVR50,000, and Gasim Ibrahim and Champa Hassan Afeef contributed MVR250,000 each to the relief fund.

In addition, Ahsan said that GMR has also implied that the company would provide aid.

Ahsan also noted the assistance of Disaster Management Centre and Maldives Red Crescent.

The President informed that the floods have affected over 100 houses in Hoarafushi. He has allocated MVR10,000,000 from the state budget, to overcome the destruction caused by the recent bad weather.
