93 percent of tourism sector workers fully vaccinated

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that 93 percent resort employees have completed both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Speaking at a press conference held this evening, President Solih stressed that the current easements given to COVID-19 restrictions in the ‘new normal’ can only be maintained if all members of the public are immunized against the virus.

 “As of today, 80 percent of the eligible population have received their first dose – out of which 69 percent have gotten their second dose as well,” he had said.

President Solih also noted that we have started to witness the results of the all the efforts put in to restore the tourism sector of country.

“As of present, 93 percent of tourist sector workers are fully vaccinated. All border control officers from Immigration have also gotten fully vaccinated,” President Solih added.

He further detailed that 82 percent of people from the 180,000 eligible to get vaccinated from the Male’ region, have gotten their first dose – whereas 70 percent have also gotten their second dose.

INOCULATION OF CHILDREN ABOVE 12 TO COMMENCE NEXT WEEK

In the same press conference, President Solih noted that a special vaccine program to inoculate children between the age of 12 and 17 will commence next week – adding that Maldives has secured enough doses to inoculate everyone above the age of 12.

“We have received enough doses to vaccinate everyone eligible. My advice to everyone who are eligible to get vaccinated is to complete their vaccination as soon as possible,” he had said.

President Solih also stressed that we could only revert back to the pre-pandemic life if everyone above the age of 12 are immunized against the virus.

While the vaccination drive in the Maldives is going ahead at full speed, a total of 332,816 people have received their first dose out of which 287,599 people have completed the second dose.

The government aims to inoculate 90 percent of the eligible population by the end of this month.

At present, three types of COVID-19 vaccines are being administered in the Maldives being Covishield/AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, and Pfizer. Apart from these vaccines, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and Sputnik V have also been approved for emergency use in the country.
