President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has returned to Male’ this morning, upon conclusion of his trip to Dubai to participate in the World Energy Forum.
The President’s Office said that while speaking at the forum, the President emphasised the importance of a sound energy policy for sustainable development, for small island nations like the Maldives.
He said that while 20 percent of the GDP of the Maldives is currently spent on diesel for transport and electricity, diesel is not a sustainable form of energy.
The President said that the biggest challenge to the development of Maldives is its expenditure on oil, and reiterated the Maldives’ commitment to achieving a low carbon economy.
