Baarah MP Mohamed Shifaz has said that Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will force the Prosecutor General (PG) to withdraw the charges against former President Mohamed Nasheed, before concluding MDP’s campaign trip ‘Journey of Pledges’ to the northern islands of the Maldives.
Speaking at a rally held at Usfasgandu last night, Shifaz said that the trip is pointless if the PG cannot be forced to withdraw the case.
He said that the PG will not be allowed to focus on other issues while ignoring his main responsibility, which is to ensure peace and order in the country.
Shifaz said that the judicial system of Maldives is ‘polluted’, and that citizens are denied justice by the Judges working within the system.
He said that MDP’s efforts to win the election of 2013 are for the benefit of the people, and that no political party other than MDP wants what is good for the people of Maldives.
Shifaz said that MDP is about to resume the Journey of Pledges, to eliminate the culture of autocracy in the Maldives through voting, and to introduce the principles of democracy in order to ensure peaceful and healthy lives for Maldivians.
The State has charged Nasheed for illegally arresting an innocent person, following his order to Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) while he was Commander-in-Chief, to arrest and detain Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed in Girifushi island.
The next hearing for Nasheed’s case is scheduled for 4 November.
