Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Wednesday that a COVID-19 patient admitted at Hulhumale’ Medical Facility has passed away.

The deceased was identified by HPA as a 77-year-old Maldivian male.

He passed away at 09:50 am.

“This is the 190th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” said HPA.

Maldives has been experiencing a surge in both infection rate and fatalities in recent weeks. While infection rates have been significantly reduced with the implementation of new restrictive measures in May, fatalities continue to be high.

Last May saw the highest number of COVID-19 fatalities in a single month, with 88 deaths. This June has seen 28 deaths.

Maldives has 68,872 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 370 new cases recorded on Tuesday. 51,213 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 17,461 active cases. 152 of the patients are hospitalized.
