Police investigations prove that Hameed provided information to MDP report: State

The State has said that Police investigations have established proof that former Head of Intelligence Department, Chief Superintendent of Police Mohamed Hameed provided information for Maldivian democratic Party’s (MDP) report on the change of government, ‘The Coup by Police and Military’.

The State said this today during the trial at Civil Court for the case filed by Hameed following his dismissal from Maldives Police Service.

Responding to Hameed’s claims that he was dismissed unlawfully, the State Prosecutor said that Hameed was dismissed for using information attained through his post, to confer undue advantage to a particular political group.

The State Prosecutor said that sharing information attained through his post with irrelevant groups could threaten the public’s view of the Police Institution.

He further said that Hameed was given the opportunity to respond to the claims and appoint a lawyer to represent him when the case was being investigated by the Disciplinary Committee prior to his dismissal, but Hameed chose to exercise his right to remain silent.

At the first hearing, Hameed requested that he be allowed to present an anonymous Police Officer as a witness. However, the State said today that it would not agree to an anonymous Police Officer providing testimony against the State in Court.

Referring to the State’s claims, Hameed’s lawyer said today that he would like to present his response in writing.

The Judge announced that the next session will be held on 4 November, before concluding today’s session.
