The President’s Office has opened for applications for membership of the Police Integrity Commission (PIC), following the resignation of its former member Shahinda Ismail.
The announcement published by the President’s Office today states that application for this post is open until 31 October.
The prerequisites to be fulfilled by members of PIC are, that they must be of 25 years of age; they must not be convicted of an offence punishable by flog as per Islamic Sharia, or of a fraudulent act, or of an offence related to bribery; they must have the capability and capacity to perform the responsibilities of the Commission; they must not be employed elsewhere; they must not be at a political post, either elected or appointed, as mentioned in the Constitution of the Maldives or in a law; and they must not be a husband, wife, child, father or mother of a Police Officer.
Shahinda cited differences of opinion, and disagreement with some decisions made by the Commission’s majority as reasons for her resignation.
